Llanelli gained only a second victory in their last six Welsh-Scottish League matches with a comfortable victory over Caerphilly at Virginia Park.

A seventh successive victory for the Scarlets over the Castletown club rekindled hopes that Llanelli can secure a top four finish.

The Scarlets, who won the reverse game 46-26, struck early in both halves.

After Llanelli fly-half Stephen Jones and opposite number Luke Richards traded early penalties, the Scarlets scored two tries in three minutes.

Former Welsh wing Wayne Proctor was worked over for the 105th league try of his career while centre Dafydd James' try was engineered by wing Garan Evans.

Caerphilly hit back with a fine individual try from flanker Ben Watkins only for Llanelli to respond with a second Jones penalty along with a touchdown from former Welsh prop John Davies.

A penalty from Richards reduced the half-time deficit to 23-13 but Llanelli again hit the home side on the resumption.

Captain Scott Quinnell and centre James both touched down in rapid succession leaving Caerphilly with only pride at stake.

But with Llanelli hooker Marcus Thomas yellow-carded, Caerphilly retaliated and gained a deserved try through wing Nigel Berbillion.

But right on time prop Phil Booth crossed for Llanelli's sixth try to give them the victory.
