Injury time victory for Cardiff
Gareth Thomas
Cardiff full-back Gareth Thomas takes on Pontypridd
Cardiff 21-14 Pontypridd

A try deep in injury time by Cardiff right-wing Nick Walne denied Pontypridd a shock win at the Arms Park.

They were leading 14-7 and looked set for their first win against their big city rivals in four years.

Then up stepped Neil Jenkins, who for 10 years had been Ponty's greatest player.

Jenkins broke the hearts of his former team-mates, first with a try under the posts that he converted to bring the scores level and then, in the dying seconds, it was his clever grubber kick that fooled their defence and allowed Walne to score.

Lack of possession

Jenkins converted again and incredibly Cardiff, who had struggled all afternoon had won 21-14.

Pontypridd deserved better.

Three penalty goals by full-back Brett Davey and a try by Gareth Wyatt were the results of taking every chance that came along.

Cardiff struggled mainly because of a lack of possession. They won only four line-outs all afternoon, but managed to go in to the interval with a 7-6 lead thanks to Walne's first try that Jenkins converted.
