Newport romp through the Reivers

Gary Teichmann: Skipper scored try for Newport
Newport 55-15 Edinburgh

Newport, still smarting after a poor performance at Neath last weekend, rocked visiting Edinburgh by scoring seven tries as well as being awarded a penalty try.

There were murmurings around Rodney Parade that Gary Teichmann's men needed to pull their socks up - and that is exactly what they did in producing some sparkling rugby to thrill their supporters with an early Christmas gift.

Newport responded impressively to an early Duncan Hodge penalty for the visitors with a fine touchdown by centre Jason Jones-Hughes, which outside-half Shane Howarth converted.

In the 19th minute South African prop Adrian Garvey stormed over for another try, converted by Howarth.

The game looked all over on the half-hour mark when referee Nigel Owens awarded the Black and Ambers a penalty try after Emyr Lewis was blatantly obstructed as he looked to make the touchdown.

Howarth, who was having a splendid match himself, popped over the goal points and then left wing Ben Breeze completed a highly impressive first half with a 34th-minute try to give Newport a deserved 26-3 interval lead.

The second half started scrappily with too many passes going astray, but Teichmann nipped in for a cheeky opportunist try and Howarth kicked a fine penalty before the real Newport onslaught started.

Matt Mostyn and Andy Marinos both scored length-of-the-field tries before Welsh international lock Ian Gough completed his side's scoring with an 82nd-minute touchdown.

Edinburgh tried hard but were generally outclassed, although they did have one bright spell midway through the second period when centres David Officer and Craig Joiner both grabbed touchdowns, one converted by Hodge.
