| Caleys clinch thriller in Perth ![]() Donny MacFadyen: Two tries for the Caleys Glasgow 45-35 Llanelli Two tries from flanker Donny MacFadyen gave Glasgow Caledonians the foundations for a late victory surge against Llanelli in this mid-table Welsh-Scottish League clash. Hosts Glasgow opened the scoring with a Tommy Hayes penalty. But Stephen Jones equalised on 15 minutes with Llanelli settling best, and when the Reds lost control at the back of a scrum Scott Quinnell pounced for the try. The Reds started to look more dangerous, but a loose kick let Llanelli attack on the counter - and Quinnell was again the scorer. Hayes pulled back a penalty, and then a move which started from the Reds' own line ended with MacFadyen diving over in the corner for his team's first try.
A Chris Wyatt try extended the Llanelli lead a minute into the second half. Hayes slotted two penalties to keep the Reds in touch, but then a Dafydd James try converted by Jones restored Llanelli's lead. Jon Steel grabbed a try with Hayes converting from the touchline, and a penalty 10 minutes from time brought the Reds close. With six minutes to go MacFadyen grabbed his second try to give the Reds the lead, and Jon Stuart's touchdown in the last minute cliched it for the home side.
After Llanelli blew their 13-point lead late in the game, coach Gareth Jenkins maintained that it was a case of the Caleys winning the game rather than the Scarlets losing it. He had praise for the talented Glasgow side, and for the standard of the playing surface. "It was a great game up here this afternoon - the surface had a lot to do with it," said Jenkins. He stressed that the long journey north was not a factor and that his team had played well. Their defeat was down to the quality of the Caleys' play and the Scots' willingness to play attacking rugby. Credit Jenkins' Caleys counterpart Richie Dixon said: "Credit goes to both sets of players for striving to keep the ball moving, even in the most difficult of circumstances. "Sure, there were mistakes - but you are always going to get that in this kind of game." He picked out young flanker Macfadyen for special mention for his two-try display, while Jenkins reckoned Caley stand-off Tommy Hayes was the man who mattered most as he claimed 25 points with his boot.
