Andy Nicol: First-minute try for the Caledonians
Cross Keys 3-54 Glasgow Caledonians

Basement club Cross Keys' hopes of chalking-up their first Welsh-Scottish League win of the season nosedived in the mud after just 54 seconds of play.

Glasgow Caledonians staged a storming attack from the first line-out which ended with Scottish skipper and scrum-half Andy Nicol crossing for a try at the post.

Outside-half Tommy Hayes converted and continued to be a thorn in the home team's suspect defence throughout the first half.

In the second period the visitors took complete control and made a nonsense of the heavy ground conditions by scoring five tries to complete the rout.

A fifth-minute Chad Bushell penalty for Keys - their only reward in a troublesome afternoon - signalled a spell of pressure for the Welshmen but it did not produce any further points.

Try and goodbye

With their backs and forwards combining in fluent passing movements the visitors extended their lead in the 27th minute when Nicol was on hand to cross for his second try which he also converted.

Unfortunately Nicol had to leave the field soon afterwards with a facial injury and he was replaced by Graeme Beveridge.

Hayes then amazingly failed to ground the ball properly when he crossed the home line unopposed.

Right on half-time impressive Glasgow hooker Gordon Bulloch charged over in the corner for a try.

Hayes made amends for his earlier lapse by kicking a superb 30-metre conversion from the touchline to make the half-time score 21-3.

It was one-way traffic in the second half with Beveridge, Shaun Longstaff, Donnie Macfadyen, Barry Irvine and James McClaren all scoring sweeping tries after adventurous attacking, while Hayes added another four conversions.

It was Keys' 10th defeat of the season and they will be hoping for some better luck as they move into the new year.
