Swansea storm into second spot

Swansea 42-16 Pontypridd

Swansea leapt into second spot in the Welsh-Scottish League thanks to a five-try hammering of Pontypridd at St Helen's.

The All Whites now look to be serious title contenders after picking up their fifth successive win of the league campaign.

Brett Davey missed a fifth-minute penalty for Pontypridd but seven minutes later Jonathan Evans took the ball from a line-out and drove through three tackles to score a try his which full-back Davey converted.

However, that advantage was short-lived; scrum-half Rhodri Jones and fly-half Cerith Rees combined to send Kevin Morgan in for a try against his former club.

Rees converted to level matters and after turning down the chance to kick a penalty at goal, the Swansea fly-half played his part in a try from former Wales wing Matthew Robinson.

It was the score Swansea required to settle their own nerves, although Ponty matched their hosts throughout the half.

Pressure

Swansea lock Tyrone Maullin got a ticking off from referee Gareth Simmonds after over-stepping the mark at a ruck and that gave Ponty the chance to apply their own pressure.

A second penalty chance followed for Davey and this time the full-back obliged from close range. By half-time, Davey had put Ponty 16-12 ahead with two more from straight in from of the posts.

Colin Charvis' converted try after 46 minutes put Swansea back in front and Rees added a penalty to extend that advantage three minutes later when Ponty were caught offside.

A second penalty for Rees took Swansea to 25-16 and a third made the game safe just after the hour.

But the final nail was hammered home with just nine minutes remaining.

Pontypridd lost possession on the Swansea 22, James Griffiths broke free and Charvis out-paced Jon Bryant for a try that Rees converted.

Just for good measure Robinson added his second seven minutes before time.
