US Open predictions
Lindsay Davenport could cause an upset in the final
Lindsay Davenport could cause an upset in the final
The BBC's Iain Carter gives his predictions for Saturday's women's singles final at the US Open and the men's semi-final matches.

Venus Williams (US) v Lindsay Davenport (US)

It is hard to bet against a player who has won her last 25 matches and Venus Williams could not have more confidence right now.

She proved unstoppable against Martina Hingis in the semi-finals but potentially, crucially, her match with Hingis followed Davenport's straight sets win in the first semi.

Davenport may therefore be decisively fresher and could spring an upset.

Prediction: Davenport to win in three sets

Pete Sampras (US) v Lleyton Hewitt (Aus)

Sampras has been his trademark self in quietly easing through the draw and was most impressive in coming from behind to beat Richard Krajicek in the quarter finals.

Hewitt though is arguably the most exciting prospect in the game and may be on the verge of making the sort of teenage breakthrough which Sampras did at the same age.

So Hewitt may repeat the success he enjoyed in the Stella Artois tournament in the final against Sampras which he won.

His confidence will also be high after his doubles win at the tournament

Prediction: Hewitt in five sets

Todd Martin (US) v Marat Safin (Rus)

Martin's never-say-die attitude in the Arthur Ashe stadium has been to the fore once again this year but on Saturday he faces his biggest test to date.

Safin has been winnning without being at the top of his game but is on an upward curve in terms of the standard of his play.

The 20-year-old is likely to have too much power for Martin.

Prediction: Safin in four sets
