Hingis digs deep to beat Seles

The agile Hingis proved too strong for Seles

Martina Hingis set up a US Open semi-final against Venus Williams with what turned out to be a hard-fought win over two-time champion Monica Seles.

Top seed Hingis stormed through the first set in just 14 minutes for the loss of a mere six points - and she looked poised for one of the quickest ever victories in a clash between two top players.

But the second set was a different story as sixth seed Seles, who had struggled to find any consistency early on, started to fire off winners from the back of the court.

Seles sees her title hopes vanish for another year
With the partisan crowd behind Seles she battled back from a break down to leave the second set nicely balanced at 5-5.

But 19-year-old Hingis showed why she is world number one by claiming the next two games to win the match 6-0 7-5.

Hingis knocked out Williams in the semis last year before losing to her sister, Serena, in the final - and she will fancy her chances of repeating that last-four triumph.

I just have to not get too intimidated by what she's doing or her winning streak - I've got nothing to lose, she has got to prove herself now
  Hingis on Williams
She has been the most impressive competitor in the women's draw this year and has lost just 15 games in five matches without dropping a set.

But Williams won their most recent encounter, the Wimbledon semi-final, and Hingis is looking for revenge.

"I would like to turn it around," she said. "The last time I was playing very well again and this time I hope it's going to be a different story."

Seles said she knew exactly where things had gone wrong: "I really started the match very sluggishly," she admitted. "I tried to get back into it. But it was way too late.

"I have to look at why that keeps happening. You have days when your timing is off. But against her, I have more days like that than I should.

"Maybe I panicked a little bit and against Martina you aren't going to get any easy points. I made so many unforced errors and the set was gone."
