Elena Dementieva (Rus) bt Lilia Osterloh (US) 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-5)

Anke Huber took her place in the final eight after French Open champion Mary Pierce was forced to retire through a shoulder injury.

Pierce had lost the first set 6-4 and had double faulted six times during the 38 minutes of play.

Huber, the 10th seed from Germany, will now face Russia's Elena Dementieva in the quarter finals who defeated American Lilia Osterloh.

"The day before yesterday, after my match with Lisa Raymond, I was 100 percent," said Pierce.

"In doubles it got sore and it was sore today. Every serve I hit it got worse."

Pierce won the French Open in June but has played just two matches in between the two tournaments, both at Wimbledon.

Spotted

Her opponent spotted her injury from the beginning of the match.

"I saw it right in the first service game," Huber said. "It's hard to play when you see her not 100 percent."

Reigning US Open champion Serena Williams overcame a first half scare to power her way to a 7-6 6-0 victory over Jelena Dokic in the fourth round.

Williams recovered three set points in the first to edge past the Australian, but showed her class by dominating her hard hitting opponent 6-0 in the second.

Williams remained in buoyant mood after her win, saying: "I'm happy and I'm really excited to go the rest of the way."

After her defeat Dokic admitted: "They are so tall and so powerful - they have a big advantage over the other players.

Tough

"They are certainly tough players at the moment, two of the best ones around. It's very hard to hit a winner against them because they are always there."

Martina Hingis also progressed into the last eight with her sixth win over 11th seed Sandrine Testud this year.

Hingis won comfortably 6-2 6-1 and recorded her 12th straight victory to set up an intriguing tie against former US Open champion Monica Seles.

Elena Dementieva also progressed into the quarter finals after a hard fought 6-3 6-7 7-6 win over American Lilia Osterloh.
