| | Sunday, 16 July, 2000, 09:55 GMT Millar's Tour agonies  David Millar slams the eight and a half hours of riding as "a joke". David Millar has branded the Tour de France's gruelling mountain stages as "sado-masochism on a major scale". The Cofidis rider's comments came after the end of the 14th stage, a 249.5 kilometre ride from Draguignan to Briancon through the mountains. He said: "To do eight-and-a-half hours on a bike is not a sport, it's sado-masochism on a major scale. "Sunday is just going to be a joke, I'm not looking forward to it at all." Laughing group Millar ended up in what was dubbed "the laughing group", finishing 36-and-a-half minutes behind the stage winner, Colombia's Santiago Botero.
The 23-year-old led the race for three days in what is his debut tour, but the rigours and turmoil of the mountain stages have taken their toll. The Scotsman, who was not helped in his progress by a crash when he dislocated his shoulder, added: "I'm not too impressed at the moment, eight-and-a-half hours on a bike doesn't make too much sense to me."
