The French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin was among the spectators for the 11th stage of the Tour de France.

The stage from Bagneres-de-Bigorre to Revel passes through his home village and the Prime Minister is a keen cycling fan.

During the early 1950s M Jospin lined the Col d'Izoard stage as three-times Tour champion Louison Babet led the way.

On Tuesday he had a more privileged position, riding along in the race directors car at the head of the procession.

At one stage he was seen standing up through the sun roof with a broad smile.
