With the three-week marathon set to start on Saturday, Yates, who is now team manager of Britain's Linda McCartney Foods Cycling team, tells us Armstrong is even better than last year. I really cannot see anyone being able to stay with Lance Armstrong for the entire three weeks of the Tour. I spoke to him on Thursday and he told me he is in great shape, which is bad news for the rest of the field.
He seemed very determined to defend his yellow yersey and has based his entire season around winning this race. The advantage he has this year is the knowledge that he can win, and in a race where confidence is so vital that is very important. In fact, Armstrong's greatest weapon is his mentality.
Every rider has bad times during the Tour and it is how you deal with those times that makes the difference. For me Lance Armstrong is the best equipped rider to win this race. A fantastic time-triallist, he is strong in the mountains, has a highly motivated team and that superb winner's mentality. | |
