| Shot of the Day Els' shot at the 17th was a touch of genius BBC's Mike Hughesdon says Ernie Els' decision to play a running shot at the 17th was the pick of the final round. It's a very difficult decision because Tiger Woods has won the Championship with a record score and everything he did was absolutely brilliant. But there was a shot by Ernie Els at the 17th from the rough on the right of the fairway which was played exactly as a links shot should be played if you're going to maximise the response to the shot. The lie was not very good in that it was a very lush lie and the grass was lying towards the hole, so there was every chance that if he took a shot that was going to go through the air at all, it was going to get a flier. So instead, he very sensibly went down the shaft of his six iron and pushed it along the ground and it rolled onto the green, about 10 feet away from the hole. Unfortunately he didn't make the putt but it was a classic shot and one which many people who watch golf and are interested in learning how to play golf should remember that when you play links golf, that is the type of shot you should have in your armoury. | See also: 23 Jul 00 | The Open 24 Jul 00 | The Open 23 Jul 00 | Photo Galleries 23 Jul 00 | The Open Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top The Open stories now: Links to more The Open stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
