BBC Sport Online charts his progress hole by hole on a day when he almost guaranteed himself victory. Hole 1: Woods tees off at 15:00 BST. He takes a low iron off the tee and bangs it down the wide first fairway. His second, a pitching wedge, lands 25 feet past the pin but safely on green. His putt drags to the left but he taps in comfortably for a par. Eleven under Hole 2: Once again with an iron from the tee, Woods finds the middle of the fairway on this 413 yards par four. With a nine iron for his second shot, his ball drifts off the green, maybe 45 feet from the pin. His birdie putt slides four feet past the hole. But his par putt lips out for his first bogey in 63 holes in a major tournament. Ten under Hole 3: After again taking an iron from the tee, Woods finds the heart of the fairway. But this time his second shot is aimed at the pin, the ball rolling on from the front of the green to about ten feet from the flag. Woods reads the putt superbly for his first birdie of the afternoon. Eleven under
Hole 4: With a three wood from the tee, Tiger finds his fourth fairway in a row. From 153 yards out, he lands pin high, 20 feet right of the pin. But he underhits the putt and has to settle for par. Eleven under Hole 5: With the driver for the first time, Woods hits the ball 358 yards on the first par five on the course. But his second shot is blind and he fails to find the green, sliding down the bank in front, leaving a third shot of around 45 yards. Using a putter from off the green, he controls the pace to leave a six footer for birdie, which he misses. Eleven under Hole 6: Again with the driver, Woods hits his tee shot to 65 yards from the pin. Woods opts to take the putter but his aim lets him down, the ball finishing 30 feet wide of the pin. His birdie effort seems destined for the hole but slides to the right at the end. He makes par comfortably. Hole 10:On this 379 par four, Woods hammers his drive onto the green, some 35 feet from the pin. But his first putt, although accurate in terms of pace, fades to the right, leaving him ten feet from the flag. His birdie attempt is unsuccessful, the ball dying to the left of the cup.Thirteen under Hole 11: A 174 yard par three, Woods' power means he needs just a wedge to put the ball pin high, but he hits the ball 20 feet to the right of the flag. He reads the putt almost perfectly, but the ball just fails to draw in, although he once again completes par. Thirteen under Hole 12: On this 314 yard par four, Woods flies through the green, leaving a tricky shot from approximately 30 yards. He plays an exquisite pitch which bounces into the fringe before rolling to three feet from the pin. Yet another birdie for the US Open champion. Fourteen under Hole 13: Taking a three wood from the tee, Woods once again finds the fairway. His iron shot from there lands to the right again, some 25 feet from the pin. He makes a tricky left to right putt look very easy for another birdie. Fifteen under Hole 14: A strong drive puts him in the centre of the fairway before an amazing second shot with a fairway wood carries the 290 yards to the green, leaving him with a 45 feet putt for eagle. His putt breezes up to the hole for an easy birdie.Sixteen under Hole 15:
Perched on the rise of a bank 150 yards from the flag after his drive, Woods lofts a chip onto the right of the green and putts up to six inches for a comfortable par. Sixteen under Hole 16:With an iron from the tee, Woods finds yet another fairway. With a middle iron he aims the ball right at the flag, but underhits it, leaving him about 30 yards from the flag. His putt from off the green negotiates the big bank but leaves him with a nasty eight footer for his par which he rattles in with little trouble. Sixteen under Hole 17: With a three wood, he sets his shot off to the left and easily avoids the trouble on the right hand side, finding yet another fairway. With 191 yards to the flag, Woods plays a brave iron shot which flirts with the notorious bunker on the left before running 20 feet past the pin. With little fear, Woods charges at the hole but just fails to hole the putt. His return putt fails to drop, meaning a second bogey. Fifteen under Hole 18: With a driver from the tee, he hammers yet another accurate drive through the middle of the fairway. After pitching to 15 feet, he nails another birdie putt for a round of 67 which included seven birdies.
