| Price-d out of it Price bows out despite a second-round 70. Former champion Nick Price was a surprise casualty as The Open hit the halfway stage. The Zimbabwean, who triumphed at Turnberry in 1994, finished on two over after 36 holes, with the cut coming at level par. Price may have suffered problems with his driving but was still expected to lay down a worthy challenge to Tiger Woods. But while the world number one tamed St Andrews, his playing partner struggled to make an impression, although he did card a two-under par round of 70 on day two. Glimpses A number of other big-names won't be seen on the Old Course on Saturday and Sunday. Seve Ballesteros showed glimpses of his best on his way to a 69 but could not make up enough ground after his first-round 78.
Mark James, who courted controversy in the run-up to the tournament with his book 'Into The Bear Pit' also made a quick exit. Not even five birdies in six holes at the start of his second-round back nine could save John Daly, another former champion, from missing the cut on four over. Leave He did not hang around either. Reporters had to run after him to see if he had any comment and the only one that was audible was: "Just leave me be." Daly, who has had alcohol, gambling and eating addictions as well as domestic problems, had real hopes that St Andrews, where he had won in 1995. But it was not to be.
Perhaps the most disappointed of the former champions will be Sandy Lyle. The 1985 winner looked in good shape after a one-under par 71 on day one but followed that up with a 78 to finish on five over. | See also: 21 Jul 00 | The Open 21 Jul 00 | The Open 20 Jul 00 | Photo Galleries Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top The Open stories now: Links to more The Open stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
