![]() | Lawrie to shrug off painful lesson ![]() Paul Lawrie after receiving treatment to his injured wrist Paul Lawrie insists his defence of The Open Championship will not be hampered by a freak practice course accident. The 31-year-old Scot was giving a lesson to a group of youngsters in the tented village at St Andrews when one of them caught him on the left wrist during his back swing. Lawrie's injury was treated with ice at the European Tour physiotherapy unit. He was advised to rest the wrist and cancel his Tuesday practice round. Lawrie said: "It was painful at the time but I'm not in doubt for Thursday. Swelling "I have just got a bit of swelling that will go down tonight and then I will play tomorrow morning, early. "It's very disappointing because I wanted to play my practice round on Tuesday, but I have to rest it and let the swelling go down." He added: "I normally only have one practice round, so it's not going to do me any damage."
He followed up his success with an impressive Ryder Cup debut in September, but since then has struggled to regain top form. This is the second time this season that Lawrie's build-up to a Major has been hit by injury. He was forced to pull out of the US Open last month because of a thigh injury. Lawrie is due to tee off at 12.20pm in Thursday's first round. He is playing on the Old Course with American duo Fred Couples and John Huston. | Other top The Open stories: Links to top The Open stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
