![]() | Pau power continues Caley misery ![]() Loss of Scotland man Glenn Metcalfe was a blow Pau 44-16 Glasgow Caledonians Glasgow's miserable Heineken Cup run continued when they were comprehensively beaten by the slick Frenchmen of Pau at the Stade Municipale. Even before the start, Caley's hopes of breaking their European Cup duck were hit when Glenn Metcalfe failed a late fitness test and was joined on the sidelines by flanker Gordon Simpson, who pulled out five minutes before the start after aggravating an old injury during the warm-up. The Scots shook off those setbacks to dominate the opening stages. However, they failed to turn possession into points and never posed a serious threat, especially after their opponents struck 22 points in a disastrous seven-minute spell before the break. Successful kick Tommy Hayes drew first blood with an early penalty, only for Pau to establish the lead through Thierry Cleda's 11th-minute try, converted by David Aucagne, who soon stretched the advantage with a penalty. Hayes then notched his second successful kick before the roof fell in on Caley.
Amidst the mayhem, centre Alan Bulloch found himself yellow-carded for retaliation, while Marty Waite suffered a similar fate on the other side of the break. Pau showed no sign of letting up, adding further tries through Bomati and full-back David Arrieta, before Caley finally restored some pride through a flurry of points by Hayes. The stand-off added his third penalty before nipping over for a late consolation try, which he converted himself.
