![]() | Saturday, 27 January, 2001, 17:41 GMT Stade Francais too strong for Pau ![]() Diego Dominguez was the architect of Stade's victory Stade Francais 36-19 Pau Diego Dominguez produced a masterly kicking performance to help Stade Francais through to the Heineken Cup semi-finals at the expense of Pau. The Argentine-born fly-half kicked 21 points as the tournament favourites came through in front of a 13,000 crowd at the Stade Jean Bouin in Paris. Pau, who had scraped into the last eight after a thrilling win over Pontypridd, began strongly and for the first half, an upset seemed possible. But Stade counter-attacked with a series of five metre line-outs and eventually broke through. After 10 minutes, Dominguez and Franck Comba combined to put winger Raphael Poulain through for a try.
Dominguez should have increased the lead but missed a sitter of a penalty 10 metres in front of the post. Centre Christophe Paille then ran in for Pau after Stade Francais prop Sylvain Marconnet fumbled a catch. David Aucagne gave Pau the lead with a drop goal and Stade began to look as if they had run out of ideas. But just before half-time, Stade scrum-half Christophe Laussucq used Dominguez as a decoy and ran through a wide open Pau defence to score. Ground down Dominguez added three points in injury time and another three points to open the second half. David Aucagne kicked three penalties for Pau but Stade Francais kept a grip on the game by slowing down the possession they were giving scrum-half Philippe Carbonneau. Dominguez added another drop goal and just before full-time drove centre Comba over the Pau line.
