| Last-gasp Gloucester sink Scarlets ![]() No way through: Simon Mannix halts Salesi Finau Gloucester 28-27 Llanelli Elton Moncrieff put over the strangest of drop goals to give the Cherry and Whites a vital win in a dramatic closing spell at Kingsholm. Llanelli led 27-25 with two minutes to go, but the Gloucester scrum-half saw his scuffed effort rebound over the bar off the back of Dafydd Rees-Jones. It was cruel for Llanelli, who were knocked out of last season's semi-finals by a last minute Northampton penalty.
And after scoring two scintillating tries which had silenced the boisterous Shed, the Scarlets arguably deserved more. Three-quarters Dafydd James and Mark Jones combined twice with telling effect, with Jones bagging two touchdowns. Outside-half Stephen Jones slotted over five penalties and one conversion to give the Scarlets the initiative before Moncrieff struck.
And Llanelli will rue a dropped ball by otherwise excellent prop Martyn Madden with the line in his sight just before half-time. The Scarlets were also hampered by indiscipline, losing Rees-Jones and Salesi Finau to the sin bin and allowed Mannix numerous attempts at goal. Powering break Gloucester had the better of the first-half, with their superior power up front pegging Llanelli back, but it was the Scarlets who scored the points. Stephen Jones kicked two of his penalties before Mark Jones got his first try. A powering break by Madden saw the ball fed wide to Dafydd James who switched the ball cleverly inside for his winger to cross.
But Gloucester's pressure told when referee Didier Menee awarded a penalty try after Llanelli pulled down a maul close to their line. The Scarlets had been persistently offside, but were furious at Menee's decision. Mannix's conversion and a penalty had the home side 10-13 behind at the break. In touch Jones and Mannix exchanged penalties straight after the interval, but Mark Jones' second try looked to have given Llanelli the edge. Dafydd James broke from the halfway line, drew Terry Fanolua and fed Jones, who had the pace and strength to shake off the cover and cross in the corner. Mannix's boot kept Gloucester in touch with four penalties before Moncrieff's effort snuck over.
