Referee warns Atherton
Sri Lanka v England, Kandy
Match referee Singh is unhappy with both teams
England's Michael Atherton and Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara have escaped with a reprimand following their altercation during the Kandy Test.

They were involved in a finger pointing exchange on Friday and were ordered to appear before match referee Hanumant Singh at the end of the fourth day's play

The Indian decided that a verbal slap on the wrist was sufficient punishment, but has given both teams a "final warning" about their behaviour.

Singh has promised that any further problems during the Test series will be dealt with severely.

He has so far taken action against six players during the series.

Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya was given a suspended four-match ban and fined 60 per cent of his match fee on Friday after showing dissent following his dismissal.

Singh: Ready to take further action

Jayasuriya hurled his helmet across the boundary rope after being adjudged caught at slip at Graham Thorpe, with TV replays confirming he had hit the ball into the ground.

Four Sri Lankans, including Sangakkara, were fined 25 per cent of their match fees for excessive appealing during the first Test at Galle.

And England's Graeme Hick was given a suspended one-match ban for dissent during the same game.

Atherton's past record is not unblemished, having been fined 2,000 in 1994 after TV cameras caught him rubbing earth on the ball during the Lord's Test against South Africa.

He is also the subject of ongoing legal action in Pakistan, where journalist Asghar Ali is claiming defamation.

Ali alleges that Atherton called him a "buffoon" at a press conference during the 1996 World Cup.
