Forced to follow-on, England's batting line-up buckled to 189 all out. The day was one to forget for Nasser Hussain's side, as a series of controversial decisions went against them. Sri Lanka triumphed comfortably.

    England fought to save the first Test against Sri Lanka after being forced to follow-on. Dismissed for 253 in their first innings and trailing by 217 runs, England lost the wickets of Marcus Trescothick and Nasser Hussain to be 118 for two wickets at the close of play.

    Marcus Trescothick hit his maiden test century to lead England's battle to avoid the follow-on against Sri Lanka. Opener Trescothick batted throughout the day for an unbeaten 119 to guide the touring team to 202 for four at the close in reply to Sri Lanka's 470 for five declared.

    England toiled helplessly as Sri Lanka compounded their success on the opening day to finish on 470-5 declared. Marvan Atapattu and Aravinda de Silva both shone brightly adding 230 runs between them. England opened their innings and finished on 27 without loss.

    After Sri Lanka won the toss and batted, England started the first day brightly enough claiming captain Sanath Jayasuriya with the score on 18. But Kumar Sangakkara and Atapattu shared a 92-run stand for the second wicket to put Sri Lanka firmly in the driving seat.
