'Desperate' Salisbury not given chance

Ian Salisbury believes he was not given the opportunity to prove himself during England's tour to Pakistan.

The Surrey leg spinner was dropped from the squad for the second leg to the winter tour to Sri Lanka after taking one wicket in three Test matches against Pakistan.

I was not given the chance to perform in a pressure situation

Nevertheless a disappointed Salisbury believes he was not given the opportunity to shine by captain Nasser Hussain at key moments in the Tests.

"I was not given the chance to perform in a pressure situation," Salisbury told BBC 5 Live.

Hussain, understandably, preferred to use the in-form Ashley Giles and Craig White in Pakistan when he needed a wicket, rather than Salisbury.

"Sometimes in those situations when you have to perform that's when you come to the party," Salisbury said.

"I was so desperate to do well I put a lot of pressure on myself."

He does not though believe it need signal the end of his England career.

"Hopefully not. They've written me off lots of times, I've been dropped probably more times than I've been picked," he said.

He averaged 193 with the ball in the series in Pakistan and his dropping for Sri Lanka was not a surprise.

"I was really disappointed but I've come to terms with it now," he said.

"I felt as though I played my part in winning the Test series but probably not in the way I should have done.

"I worked really hard for two years to get back into the England side.

"I was working on a few new things with the England coach Duncan Fletcher. To get back to the elation and then to be told you are not going away (to Sri Lanka) just before Christmas was not the present I wanted."
