| |  Friday, 20 July, 2001, 11:47 GMT 12:47 UK Detectives probe TV deals  Dalmiya: Under investigation by the CBI Indian detectives and the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption Unit are collaborating in an inquiry into allegations of malpractice surrounding TV rights deals. The ACU has obtained documents which may be relevant to an ongoing inquiry by the Delhi-based Central Bureau of Investigation. And new ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed has promised full co-operation with the visiting officers. "In carrying out these duties I will fear no one and favour no one, he vowed earlier this week. "I will take a zero tolerance approach to issues of corruption and defending the spirit of cricket."
The CBI has already begun legal action against officials of TV network Doordarshan for allegedly inflating fees for the 1997 Independence Cup tournament and 1998 ICC Knockout Cup. Rights negotiations for the two events were carried out by then ICC president Jagmohan Dalmiya and Speed's predecessor, David Richards. In November last year, the homes and offices of Dalmiya and some Doordarshan executives were searched by the CBI and documents were seized. Another company, WorldTel, has also been implicated in the case and its chief, Mark Mascarenhas, was interviewed in May. Dalmiya was ICC president from 1997 until June last year, when he was succeeded by Australian Malcolm Gray. He is now chairman of the Asian Cricket Federation. | |
