Charlton not giving up
Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst
Bobby Charlton is still optimistic
Bobby Charlton is not giving up on England's chances of winning the vote to host the 2006 World Cup, while South Africa's bid chief Danny Jordaan is taking nothing for granted.

One day before the teams are to put their bids to Fifa, Charlton told reporters, "We are a long way from being dead."

Most observers believe that the violence perpetrated by hooligans at Euro 2000 has wrecked any chances that England had of winning the vote, but Charlton thinks differently.

"I am ashamed of the hooligans like everybody else but I consider that we are still very much in the race," he said.

Bid director Alec McGivan is also in bullish mood, making it clear that England are not giving up the ghost.

"I want to make it very clear once and for all that there's not been any question of us pulling out," said McGivan.

But things are looking very good for South Africa, especially now that the South American federation have thrown their wait behind the bid of Danny Jordaan and his men.

But Jordaan is not cracking open the Champagne just yet.

"At this stage I believe the outcome is still too close to call," he said.

"We are very pleased and encouraged by Brazil's decision. It's the result of many months and years of discussions but we are even at this stage working very hard right up to the last minute taking absolutely nothing for granted."
