Sweden's Sophie Gustafson is a starter at Warrenpoint |
Ulster will host a major ladies' golf tournament in August as part of the European tour. The event will take place at Warrenpoint on 15-17 August and will feature the cream of the top European women professionals in a precursor to the Solheim Cup.
Leading the parade will be Sweden's Sophie Gustafson who pipped Britain's Laura Davies to win the Irish Ladies' Open in Killarney last Sunday after shooting a career-best 63 in the second round.
The government-back Northern Ireland Events' Company is behind the tour event which will have 150,000 prize money on offer.
The Company have moved quickly to fill the gap left by the temporary absence of the men's Senior British Open which will be played at Turnberry at the end of July.
It is expected that the event will return to the province next year with Portrush being pencilled in.
''Golf has been spectacularly successful in projecting Ulster's profile around the world,'' said John Walker chief executive of the Events' Company.
''The absence of the men's event next month left a void that had to be filled. We now hope there will soon be news of another major event for the province.''
