Bjorn eyes automatic Ryder berth
Thomas Bjorn
Bjorn, a winner in Ireland already this year, is back in K Club contention
Denmark's Thomas Bjorn is targeting a place in Europe's Ryder Cup team after his record-breaking comeback to win the Irish Open on Monday.

Bjorn fought back from an opening 78 to win on the final hole at Carton House - and now wants similar success at the nearby K Club in September.

He said: "If you're not in the Ryder team when you play at my level, you're not playing the right sort of golf.

"But if I want to be on the team I think I might have to play my way in."

Europe's Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam has already warned that his star names will have to prove their mettle on the European Tour if they expect to be picked.

Former Ryder Cup stalwarts Padraig Harrington, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood are all currently struggling to make the automatic places.

Bjorn said: "I think Woosie is in a situation where he's going to need his two wild cards.

"We don't have 12 guys that can win the Ryder Cup any more. Once they only had eight or nine - but now we have 24 guys that can win it."

"It's not life or death for me, but I would like to be there just for the reason that I know that I'm playing the right sort of golf.

"It's more a personal thing that I desperately want to be on that team."
