Robert Garrigus has a one-shot lead going into the third round

Robert Garrigus fired a stunning 10-under-par 63 to shoot to the top of the leaderboard after the second round of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

The American played a near faultless round to close one stroke ahead of the joint overnight leader Carl Pettersson.

Pettersson's co-leader after day one, Jonathan Byrd, shot 68 to lie third.

England's Ian Poulter is six shots off the lead but Camilo Villegas was disqualified for a rule violation.

A television viewer called in after noticing during the first round that the Colombian, who turned 29 on Friday, moved a blade of grass near a divot while his ball was still in motion on the 15th hole.

606: DEBATE

Rule 23-1 says that when a ball is moving "a loose impediment that might influence the movement of the ball must not be removed".

Such a violation carries a two-stroke penalty which meant Villegas made a nine on the hole although he signed for a double-bogey seven.

At the finish he signed for a one-under-par 72 on the first round instead of a 74 and was disqualified from the season-opening USPGA Tour event for having an incorrect scorecard.

Meanwhile, as the second round unfolded, Garrigus shot par on the first two holes before picking up four consecutive birdies between the 3rd and 6th holes.

As he started the inward nine he picked up strokes at the 10th and 12th and then had an eagle at the par-four 16th. That was part of another hot streak which he followed with two further birdies to cap a fine effort.

"It feels great," said Garrigus. "Leading a tournament after two days really doesn't mean much but it would be nice if I could finish it off this weekend."

Swede Pettersson sunk five birdies as well as an eagle at the 5th, only for a bogey at the 9th to deny him parity with Garrigus.

The second-best performance of the day came from South Africa's Ernie Els, whose nine-under-par round of 64 was enough to catapult him 18 positions for a share of fourth.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell remains seven shots off the lead on -7.
