Wood finished fifth as an amateur in the 2008 Open at Royal Birkdale |
England's Chris Wood shot an eight-under-par 63 in the first round to take a share of the clubhouse lead in a rain-lashed Singapore Open. Wood, who finished joint-third in the Open in 2009, led the way with playing partner Kim Bi-o of South Korea. Play was suspended for four hours in the morning following heavy rain and lightning, leaving 108 late starters to complete their first round on Friday. Defending champion Ian Poulter is level par after six holes. Meanwhile, Spain's Igancio Garrido enjoyed a superb opening 11 holes, recording six birdies on his way to an impressive score of 30 on the front nine. Garrido, whose round was halted due to bad light, is currently eight under par alongside Wood and Bi-o. Wood enjoyed a majestic start, reeling off three consecutive birdies before play was suspended. The Englishman returned to add an eagle at the sixth, before three more birdies took him top of the leaderboard. Japanese veteran Shigeki Maruyama posted a 64, with a bogey at the par-five 12th his only blemish on a round that included six birdies and an eagle. Swede Rikard Karlberg was level with Maruyama with three holes to play. Northern Ireland's Gareth Maybin also enjoyed a strong start and finished his round only two shots off the lead. Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell, Nick Dougherty, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Jamie Donaldson and YE Yang were all part of a chasing group at five under par.
