Montgomerie hopes to appear in his 10th Ryder Cup as a player

Outgoing Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie is to recommend that changes are made to the way Europe selects its team for the 2012 contest.

The Scot says having to leave out Paul Casey and Justin Rose was "the worst day of my professional career".

"We have to devise a system of getting top players like that into the European team," he added.

The Europe side is selected from world ranking points and the PGA Tour list, but some top players can miss out.

As captain, Montgomerie was also able to select three wild card players - Italian Edoardo Molinari, Englishman Luke Donald and Ireland's Padraig Harrington.

But the formula used to determine the other nine team members meant that world number seven, Casey, and Rose - who has won two PGA Tour events this year and was victorious in three of his four Ryder Cup games in 2008 - were left out.

"I don't want any future captain to have to go through what I went through on that awful evening in Gleneagles," Montgomerie commented.

"We have to devise a system of getting top players like that into the European team."

Montgomerie sits on the European Tour committee which will select his successor for the 2012 Ryder Cup in Medinah and discuss any new selection process.

The 47-year-old Perthshire player said he was going to concentrate on his game to see if he could qualify as an ordinary team member for the tournament.
