Harrington won both the Open and USPGA titles in 2008 |
Former Open champion Padraig Harrington has added another European event to his schedule in a bid to gain form for the Ryder Cup commencing on 1 October. The three-time major winner has not won on the US or European Tours since 2008 and had to rely on a Ryder Cup wildcard pick from captain Colin Montgomerie. The 39-year-old Irishman will now play in the Vivendi Trophy in Paris the week before the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor. Harrington made his Cup debut in 1999 and has played in the last five events. His record in the biennial competition is mixed, with seven wins, three halves and 11 defeats from 21 matches. In foursomes he has won only two of nine matches and he has also won only two of seven games in the fourballs, but his singles record is better, with three wins and two defeats in five matches. This year he has played in 18 events on the US Tour, making the cut in 12 of them with five top-10's and a best finish of third at the WGC-CA Championship in March. He missed the cut at last week's Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston after rounds of 74 and 68.
