Phil Price was a Ryder Cup hero against Phil Mickelson in 2002 |
Ex-Ryder Cup winning captain Bernard Gallacher expects Wales' Phil Price to be among the European vice-captains for the 2010 tournament at Celtic Manor. European team captain Colin Montgomerie will name four captains on Tuesday and 1995 skipper Gallacher says Price is a good bet for the October event. "He's [Price] played in a Ryder Cup and he's a Welshman and that would be important, I think," Gallacher said. "I'd be very surprised if Monty doesn't put Philip Price in there to help him." Montgomerie has made no secret of his desire to have a Welshman as part of his back-up staff in Newport. But Wales' best bets for a place among the players to take on the United States, Rhys Davies and Bradley Dredge, are struggling to make the grade. Price's Belfry heroics and impact on the 2002 win, when he beat Phil Mickelson to inspire Europe to victory, have remained in Montgomerie's thoughts with 2006-winning captain Ian Woosnam unlikely to play a part. Woosnam appointed Irishman Des Smyth as his trusted right-hand man when Europe beat the Americans for an unprecedented third time in Ireland in 2006. Irishman Paul McGinley and Thomas Bjorn of Denmark are also believed to be among the favourites to be Monty's eyes and ears at Celtic Manor. Montgomerie has stated: "We will have four matches on the course at any one time and I would like to have somebody walking with each game and I oversee the whole thing. So four vice-captains seems to be the number."
