Wilson hit out at the R and A after his second round 79
Oliver Wilson blamed the R & A for making 'a mockery' of The Open as he crashed out at halfway with a seven-over 79 at windswept St Andrews. Wilson was on the Old Course for seven hours, including a suspension of play for over an hour due to high winds. But he suggested that, rather than stopping play, the R & A should have opted for 'more sensible' pin placings. "I'm a little bit bitter as I've not played very well," he said, "but they have made a mockery of the tournament." The Surrey-based Mansfield golfer told BBC Sport: "I think they could have used their brains and set it up a bit better. "Obviously you can't control the weather but they could have been a lot more sensible with the pins when they know it's going to be this windy. "Every single pin was on the high point on every green. When they knew what the wind was going to be like, that makes no sense whatsoever. "Even if they put the pins right in the middle of every green, it's still going to be tough. But at least you're still going to have opportunities to make birdies." After his first day four-under 68, it all started going wrong for Wilson at the second, where he dropped the first of four shots in three holes, culminating in a double bogey six at the fourth after finding an unplayable lie off the tee. He did make one birdie at the 8th, but four more dropped shots at 11, 13, 15 and 17 saw him home in 40 to finish three over. Following his debut at Carnoustie in 2007, it was his third missed cut in four attempts at The Open. "Nobody wants to see people shooting 79 or worse," added Wilson. "Don't get me wrong, Louis Oosthuizen has got a five-shot lead because he has played unbelievable golf, and I hope nobody says that he's had the best of the weather because he played fantastic yesterday in tough conditions. "But the 11th today was unplayable. My partner Nick Watney's putt actually rolled back 20 feet, and it was probably windier then than when they stopped it. "They'd set it up as if they were afraid they were going to get flooded, and you don't get flooded on a links course."
