Dredge plays down Ryder Cup hopes

If not selected Bradley Dredge will watch the Ryder Cup on television

Bradley Dredge has played down his hopes of selection for the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in October.

Welshman Dredge believes never having played in the Europe v Unite States clash puts him at a disadvantage.

He said: "I'd certainly consider it, but in terms of Ryder Cup experience and things, obviously I've never played.

"So to help the team out for that week I think they can call on perhaps more experienced guys than me."

At the start of the European season Dredge was regarded as Wales' strongest candidate for a place in Colin Montgomerie's line-up at Celtic Manor, Newport in October.

Since then another Welshman, Rhys Davies, has impressed and Tredegar-born Dredge has slipped down the rankings to become an outside shot at a place in the European team.

And if, as expected, he misses out, Dredge intends to watch the event on television.

He said: "I've always felt you can see more on the TV to be honest. I know you miss out on the atmosphere, but you get to see more of the matches, actually, on the TV so I prefer to do it that way."

Dredge shone between 2005 and 2007 and €1m barrier in those three successive years, but in 2008 and 2009 he failed to reach the half-a-million Euro barrier.

This year Dredge, who partnered countryman Stephen Dodd to World Cup success in 2005, has accumulated €154,612 and lies 84th in the European tour rankings while Davies lies sixth in his debut year with €1,009,118 in the bank from his efforts.

However, Dredge is 29th in the Ryder Cup race with two more months of qualifying time remaining before Montgomerie's team is finalised.

Phil Price was the last Welshman to play in a Ryder Cup - when he helped Europe beat the United States at The Belfry in 2002 - and he followed in the footsteps of fellow Welshmen Ian Woosnam, Brian Huggett, Dai Rees and Dave Thomas to play in the biennial showpiece.
