Colin Montgomerie reveals calf muscle injury scare

Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie is determined to play in the Open at St Andrews in July despite suffering from a calf muscle injury for three weeks.

Montgomerie, second in the 2005 Open at St Andrews, qualified for this year's Championship for the 21st time in a row after a 62 at Sunningdale New Course.

"I've no idea how I did it but the muscle is torn, the pain is all through my back and Achilles tendon," he said.

"After a 62 to get in I don't want to miss out," the 47-year-old added.

The European captain was able to complete a second round of 68 at the BMW International in Munich to reach a halfway total of six under par, which was enough to comfortably make the cut.

After managing to complete his round with the aid of painkillers, the Scotsman headed straight to the physiotherapy wagon.

"I've been seeing Germany's under-21 football team doctor; his boss is in South Africa [at the World Cup], of course," Montgomerie revealed.

"He's been very helpful because he's used to dealing with footballers who have this type of injury."
