Rose won the Memorial Tournament by three shots on Sunday

England's Justin Rose will not compete at the US Open after failing to finish in the top 15 in qualifying in Ohio.

The 29-year-old, who was looking to build on his first PGA Tour victory at the weekend, finished the 36-hole event tied for 31st on four under par.

American Eric Axley won the event with a 17-under par total while major champions Tom Lehman, Davis Love and Ben Curtis also qualified.

England's Brian Davis and Matthew Richardson also made it through.

Davis, twice a runner-up on the US Tour this season, won the 36-hole event in Ohio where only three places were up for grabs in a 59-strong field.

Former Walker Cup player Richardson, who now plays on the Nationwide Tour in the United States, finished joint second in Portland, Oregon.

The US Open starts on 17 June at Pebble Beach in California.

Rose was in contention after a four-under par 68 in the first round, which included four birdies on the back nine, to be tied for 12th, but he slipped down the leaderboard in the afternoon with a level par second round of 72 to miss out by three shots.

He moved up from 66th to 33rd in the world after winning the Memorial Tournament on Sunday, his first victory on the PGA Tour in 162 attempts, but the cut-off for qualifying for the year's second major through ranking was two weeks ago.

That deadline was imposed to allow the US Golf Association time to determine how many of the 156 places at the year's second major would be available to qualifiers.

The Ohio play-off, held at The Lakes and Brookside courses, was among 13 qualifying events across America.

Former PGA Champion Shaun Micheel was one of 12 to come through Memphis qualifying.

US Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin missed out in Chicago by two shots, while 1992 US Open winner Tom Kite also failed to qualify - missing out by one shot in Colorado.

Davis carded rounds of 67 and 64 to beat Korean teenager Noh Seung-yul and American Erik Compton by four shots.

Richardson, meanwhile, booked his place in his second major with round of 68 and 69.

He finished three shots behind Canadian winner Kent Eger and will now compete in his first major since the Open in 2005.
