Phil Mickelson blew his chance to become world number one for the first time when he missed the cut at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

The American, who would have overtaken Tiger Woods at the top of the rankings with victory in Texas, carded 71 and 73 for four over to miss out by six shots.

England's Brian Davis carded 65 to tie for third at 11 under, two strokes behind leader Bryce Molder.

Britons Paul Casey, Justin Rose, Martin Laird and Ian Poulter all made the cut.

Davis' five-under round came despite having overnight hospital treatment to remove a mouth abscess.

"It's just one of those things, I went last night and had it taken care of," said Davis.

"Obviously I've got a lots of swelling still so it will take a few days to go down, but I'll be fine."

Mickelson, who clinched his fourth major crown at last month's Masters, had not missed a cut on the PGA Tour since the April 2009 Houston Open, a run of 21 events.

"I played terrible," said the 39-year-old, who leaked five bogeys on a still, hot day in Fort Worth. "The course is in great shape.

"There was no wind and there were a ton of birdies out there. And I didn't make have many of them. I thought my game was sharper.

"This was a good barometer, though. This starts my run into the [17-20 June] US Open. It tells me that I have a lot of work to do.

"I thought I was playing really well. I had some good practice sessions at home. As it turned out, I'm a little bit rustier than I thought.

"I didn't drive it very well. I didn't hit many good iron shots. I'll get home, get some practice in and see if I can get this thing turned around."

Mickelson has won 38 PGA Tour titles but he has never topped the world rankings.

Asked this week whether he was surprised the number one spot had eluded him since he turned professional in 1992, he replied: "I don't know how to answer that.

"I would say 13 of those years were in Tiger years. It hasn't been the easiest."

Woods, who is not playing at Colonial, has been world number one for the last 259 weeks, and an overall total of 601.

Molder fired 62 to add to his opening 65 for a one-shot halfway lead over fellow American Jason Bohn, who carded 65 on Friday.

US-based Londoner Davis maintained his spell of good form after he came close to a maiden PGA Tour title last month.

Davis made a play-off against former US Open champion Jim Furyk at the Verizon Heritage event but called a penalty on himself for illegally striking a reed with his backswing, suffering a two-shot penalty which effectively handed the title to Furyk.

Also at 11 under was American Kris Blanks, with countrymen Jeff Overton and Boo Weekley 10 under and US Ryder cup captain Corey Pavin at nine under alongside Swede Carl Pettersson, former Masters champion Zach Johnson and John Mallinger.

Casey and Laird ended four under, Rose was three under, and Poulter squeezed into the weekend right on the cut mark at two under after a pair of 69s.
