Graeme McDowell carded five birdies in his second round |
Graeme McDowell had a disastrous double-bogey at the last to spoil an impressive second-round charge at the Honda Classic on Friday. Rathmore man McDowell had five birdies in a flawless 17 holes and had closed to within one shot of the lead. But that seven at 18th after taking a two-shot penalty meant that he finished on five under and left him three behind Camilo Villegas and Anthony Kim. Rory McIlroy was on even par after a one-under 69 in the second round. McDowell, 30, was a shot off the lead when he got to the 18th but suffered a two-shot penalty after his tee shot came to rest in a few inches of water. The ball was actually playable and although McDowell managed to hit the ball out of the lake, his backswing caused the water to slightly ripple earning him the penalty after a lengthy television review. "It's a bit of a bittersweet end to the day," McDowell said. "I'm glad it's Friday. It could be Sunday and that would hurt a lot more. I've got all weekend to repair the damage." Padraig Harrington is 10 behind the leaders after firing a second successive 71.
