Rory McIlroy's heavy loss to Cabrera cost him a semi-final spot |
Rory McIlroy has missed out on a place in the Volvo World Match Play semi-finals despite winning both of his games in Spain on Friday. The Holywood player finished level on four points with Angel Cabrera in Group C after beating Simon Dyson 2up and Henrik Stenson 4up. However, his five-hole hammering by Argentina's Cabrera in Thursday's opener proved decisive. Cabrera topped the group thanks to a superior holes won/lost difference. The Masters champion was nine holes better than McIlroy after thumping Dyson 7up. McIlroy drew level with Dyson on Friday morning after the Englishman bogeyed the 15th. The 20-year-old birdied the final two holes to secure the win and keep his hopes alive. Stenson defeated Cabrera 2up to leave all four players on two points with one match remaining. McIlroy was one down after Stenson birdied the opener but the Northern Ireland player took charge and was 5up after 11. He cruised to victory but was denied a spot in the last four as Cabrera crushed Dyson.
