Uihlein had the honour of sealing the US team's victory |
The United States retained the Walker Cup with a 16.5-9.5 victory over Great Britain and Ireland at the Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania. It was an emphatic win as the US, who have now won the last three events, sealed victory with seven of the 10 singles matches still to play. Peter Uihlein was the player to get the US over the winning line with a 3&1 defeat of Stiggy Hodgson. The US enjoyed a convincing 8-4 lead going into the second day. They continued that momentum into Sunday's play, winning three of the four Foursome contests to put themselves on the brink of victory. With just two points needed, the US saw Scotland's Gavin Dear delay the inevitable by beating Brian Harman 3&2 in the lead-off match. But Rickie Fowler's 2&1 win over Matt Haines got the US back on track before the 20-year-old Uihlein put the result beyond doubt. It rendered the rest of the singles matches as irrelevant, with American Brendan Gielow fittingly winning the final match against Dale Whitnell 4&3.
