Welshman Dredge is desperate to make the Ryder Cup team |
Welshman Bradley Dredge is one shot off the lead after the second round of the European Masters in Switzerland. Dredge trails South African Thomas Aiken, who ended the day on 10 under after posting a second-round 64. Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez is level with Dredge on nine under with Englishman Simon Dyson a shot behind after his second-round 71. Overnight leader Brett Rumford had a bad day, firing a two-over 73 to leave him on seven under. Dyson is joined in fourth on eight under with fellow Englishman Ross McGowan, Ireland's Paul McGinley and Filipino Angelo Que. Lee Westwood, Graeme McDowell and Oliver Wilson all stand on four under as does Rory McIlroy, chasing a win that would take him to the top of the money list for the first time. | For me, the Ryder Cup is my goal. That's it - I'm looking at starting a year-long new season from this week onwards |
The European Masters is the first event counting towards qualification for the 2010 Ryder Cup and Dredge admits the competition at the Celtic Manor in Wales is firmly on his mind. "It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me, and my intention is to get into that team," said Dredge. "For me, the Ryder Cup is my goal. That's it - I'm looking at starting a year-long new season from this week onwards." Only last week Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie said he would "like a Welsh involvement" in the attempt to win back the trophy off the Americans and that was music to Dredge's ears. "Having three Irish guys in the 2006 team made a difference to the atmosphere at the K Club, and it would be great to have at least one [Welshman] there next year," he said. Aiken's 64 at Crans-sur-Sierre included an eagle and six birdies. Dredge started the day six behind Australian Rumford after his opening 68, but he moved up the field with three birdies either side of the of the turn. "Conditions were close to perfect," added Dredge. "Luckily the rain and snow that people were talking about didn't happen."
