Dyson equalled the course record with his final round of 63 |
England's Simon Dyson won a three-way play-off to claim victory at the KLM Open in the Netherlands on Sunday. Dyson, who had earlier shot a course record-equalling 63, was level with Ireland's Peter Lawrie and Sweden's Peter Hedblom on 15 under par. But the trio needed just one play-off hole to decide the outcome with Dyson, winner three years ago, birdying the 18th with a superb 18-foot putt. Fourth and fifth places went to Damien McGrane and Darren Clarke. Dyson was first in the clubhouse following a superb final round that included seven birdies. Lawrie later fired carded 67 to set up the play-off, with overnight leader Hedblom joining them after shooting 69. Lawrie had been one ahead of Dyson with three to play, but bogeyed the 16th before finishing with two pars. Hedblom appeared to be slipping out of contention but hit the flag with his tee shot on the 17th and stopped two feet away. Hedblom then had a 25-foot putt opportunity to win on the last, but pushed it wide. Sweden's Peter Hedblom had been the overnight leader |
So the trio moved onto the first play-off hole but Hedblom went over the green and bogeyed, while Lawrie was studying a five-foot par putt when Dyson struck. It was the 31-year-old's first title since he won the same event in 2006 and it earned him a career-high cheque for more than £257,000. "When I birdied the seventh and ninth I thought back to doing the same when I won," said Dyson. "Then I birdied the 12th like I did then." He had also rolled in a 20-footer on the 10th, but the crucial one was a 35-footer at the 17th. "It was travelling," he admitted. "It's funny when you see the line you're not thinking about the pace. That was a bonus."
