Woods shows his delight after one of his eight birdies |
Tiger Woods put in another impressive display to take a one-shot lead going into the final round of the Buick Open. Woods began the day four shots behind halfway leader John Senden of Australia but fired a seven-under round of 65 to move well into contention on 17 under. He then saw American Michael Letzig double bogey the 18th which allowed the 14-time major winner to move one clear at the top of the leaderboard. Senden shot a 71 to finish on 15 under - two shots behind Woods. Woods, in his first tournament since missing the cut at the Open, opened with a 71 after what he said was probably his worst ever putting day. But he roared back into contention with a second round 63 and is well placed going into Sunday's final round. | 606: DEBATE |
However, his round was not without error as he twice drove onto adjacent fairways on the back nine and was relegated to shaping some shots around trees. "The whole idea of the game is put the ball in the hole, and I did that," Woods said. "But as far as controlling my ball, I didn't do that." American Letzig hit a poor shot out of a greenside bunker at the 18th, barely clearing it and leaving him with a tricky lie which he eventually bogeyed to leave him 16 under. He and Woods will make up the final pairing for Sunday's final round with a chasing pack of Australian Senden on 15 under and American duo Matt Bettencourt and Vaughn Taylor, currently sharing fourth place after carding 65 and 69 respectively on Saturday. If Woods is victorious on Sunday, it will be his third Buick Open title and 69th on the PGA Tour. It would go someway towards making up for the disappointment of missing the cut - only the second time he has done so at a major - at the Open two weeks ago.
