Broadhurst hits an approach during his fourth-round 74 at Turnberry |
Atherstone's Paul Broadhurst finally shook off the heavy cold that has dogged him at Turnberry to find his golf game a bit 'under the weather'. "It was just a struggle really," Broadhurst told BBC Sport after his final-round four-over 74 to leave him at 10 over for the Championship. "Saturday was the worst I've felt on a golf course in a long time and I couldn't really expect much. "But although I felt much better today, it was the worst I've played all week." Broadhurst began with a bogey five, a shot he instantly got back at the next, only to then double bogey the long seventh. "I hit an awful tee-shot," he added. "And I ended up hacking my way up for a seven." | The Open's not easy. It's a real test of endurance and your game. You get put under the microscope and this week I've not passed the test |
Further dropped shots followed at 8, 12 and 14. He did get another birdie at 15 and should have had one more at 18 when he hit a wonderful approach to seven feet and missed the putt. But he admitted: "I just didn't play well. I was leaking it to the right and 74 was not that bad an effort for the way I actually played. But it was what I deserved. "I had great support out there. There were a few cries of 'Come on the Adders'," revealed the keen Atherstone United fan. "And it was nice to have the family there watching me. "But they suffered as much as I did. They don't like to see me hacking my way out of the thick stuff. "The Open's not easy. It's a real test of endurance and your game. You get put under the microscope and this week I've not passed the test."
