Montgomerie spent Wednesday practising for the 138th Open

Colin Montgomerie says he is over the anger he felt after Sandy Lyle accused him of cheating and is concentrating on the Open, which starts on Thursday.

In a newspaper interview, Lyle had said that his fellow Scot cheated during an event in Indonesia in 2005.

Lyle then apologised on Tuesday as the pair prepare to compete at Turnberry.

Montgomerie told the Daily Telegraph: "I was initially very cross, but I'm over it now and am certainly not going to hold any grudges."

He added he was grateful for the support other players had given him.

"I appreciated the statement put out by the European Tour describing the comments as 'wholly inappropriate and ill-timed', and I am particularly grateful for all the text messages of support I have received," said Montgomerie.

"They have come from Ryder Cup golfers past and present and from other players from around the world.

"I am not going to mention names here because it will only bring a shower of microphones down upon their heads, but I know who you are and have been touched by your words."

Montgomerie, 46, said his preparation for the Open had "obviously been disrupted" by the furore surrounding Lyle's comments but that all he wanted to do now was post a low score on one of his favourite courses.

"It is very disappointing as Turnberry is one of my favourite spots on this earth," said the Scot.

"It's great that I still fascinate parts of the media, but it would be lovely if tomorrow (Thursday) they could write about my thrilling round of 66 instead of rehashing old events.

"Sit back and enjoy. Turnberry has been ranked the number one course in Britain for the past three years. It has so much character.

"There is no more beautiful sight than the stretch of holes around the turn. This is our Pebble Beach, our Monterey Peninsula. This is our Turnberry."
