Harrington has missed four cuts in his last five PGA Tour events |
Ireland's Padraig Harrington admitted there were few positives as he crashed out of the US Open in emphatic fashion. The USPGA and Open champion carded two rounds of 76 to end 12 over to miss the cut by eight strokes at Bethpage. "It's hard to take anything positive out of this," said Harrington, who has missed four cuts in five US starts. "I've had a bad run for the last four months but I've improved elements of my game that have been annoying me. I just have to wait and let it come back." Harrington struggled alongside defending champion Tiger Woods and Masters winner Angel Cabrera in Thursday's atrocious weather, sliding to four-over after six holes before play was suspended because of waterlogging. He was unable to make amends when he resumed on Friday morning and despite starting with two birdies in his first five holes on Saturday, he was unable to claw back any more ground and dropped five shots in his last five holes. | I believe that it can come around in four weeks and that by the time I tee it up at the Open I will be readye |
"It was a tough day," said the 37-year-old, who has been tinkering with his swing since winning his third major at the USPGA last Augusta. "I got the start I wanted and then it was disappointing to lose it in the middle of the round with a few bad drives and I struggled to get it back after that. "My short game was sharp today which was pleasing but it wasn't yesterday and that was the same as last week. "One really good day and one really poor day - it needs to be working for the four days and all running together." | 606: DEBATE |
Harrington defends his Open crown at Turnberry in Scotland next month and believes his game is close to gelling after working hard on his putting and bunker play. "I have sorted out a putting issue that has bothered me for a couple of years and a bunker issue that has been a real struggle for the last couple of years," he said. "All that will make me a better player going forward. It can come round in a day. This game is fickle in that way but I believe that it can come around in four weeks and that by the time I tee it up at the Open I will be ready."
