Woosnam rules out Ryder Cup role

Former Europe Ryder Cup-winning captain Ian Woosnam has ruled himself out of any official involvement for 2010.

The event will take place on Woosnam's home turf at Celtic Manor, but the Welshman says he has not been asked to help out by captain Colin Montgomerie.

"If he does I'll be telling him that I won't be doing anything," Woosnam said.

"I didn't get the captaincy job - I'm not bitter about that at all - but I feel that if I didn't get the captaincy job I want to stand down and enjoy it."

Woosnam, who clinched the trophy as captain at the K Club in 2006, added: "I'll be there, doing some hospitality or something like that."

Europe will try to reclaim the trophy after Nick Faldo's team lost to the USA at the 2008 event in Valhalla.

Woosnam was speaking ahead of his participation in the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open at Royal Porthcawl.

I don't think I've won in Wales for a long time

The 51-year-old admits that Wales has not been a happy hunting ground for titles, and Woosnam faces the likes of Gordon J Brand, Costantino Rocca and Sam Torrance this weekend.

"I don't think I've won in Wales for a long time, I think I've only won the Welsh Pro Championship once so I've got to try and improve on that," Woosnam said.

But Woosnam, who goes into Royal Porthcawl second in the Seniors rankings, says he is hoping to split his golfing time between playing and the new task of designing courses.

"I've got my golf course design company called Royal Golf Design and... I'm getting involved in some projects and trying to push that and do the two together," Woosnam said.

"Hopefully when the golf finishes I can get onto the golf course design."
