Pinehurst was the scene of Michael Campbell's 2005 US Open victory |
The men's and women's US Opens in 2014 will be held at Pinehurst in successive weeks - the first time both tournaments have been staged on the same course. The events will run back-to-back in June on Pinehurst's number two course. US Golf Association executive director David Fay said: "It promises to provide a promotion of women's championship golf unlike anything we've ever seen." Meanwhile, the tournament will return to Oakmont Country Club, Pennsylvania, in 2016 for a record ninth time. Oakmont staged the US Open for the eighth time in 2007 when Argentina's Angel Cabrera held off Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk to win the first major of his career. At Pinehurst in 2014, the men's edition will be held on 12-15 June, with the women's event staged a week later at the North Carolina club. Pinehurst's number two course, designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1907, was the scene of Michael Campbell's 2005 Open victory over Tiger Woods. New Zealander Campbell edged out Woods by two strokes. The American golfer is favourite to win this year's championship at Bethpage Black in New York which starts on Thursday. Pebble Beach in California will host the US Open in 2010, Congressional Country Club in Maryland in 2011, San Francisco's The Olympic Club in 2012, Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania in 2013, Pinehurst number two in North Carolina in 2014 and Chambers Bay in Washington State in 2015.
