Gay leads on 10-under after the second round

American Brian Gay carded a second round 66 to take the clubhouse lead at the St Jude Classic as play was halted because of the threat of storms.

Gay is on 10 under, two shots ahead of countryman Bryce Moulder and Australia's Robert Allenby, who has three holes left to play in Memphis.

South Africa's Retief Goosen managed to complete his round and carded a 67, three-under for the tournament.

But Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell slipped back to three under after a 71.

The horn sounded to halt play at 1623 local time with thunder and lightning approaching the area, and officials opted to stop for the day.

The second round will resume early on Saturday when 78 players will have to return to complete their rounds.

The third round will follow immediately with players grouped in threesomes rather than pairs and the groups will play off split tees.

606: DEBATE

Gay was five shots clear when he carded his seventh birdie of the day at the 15th but bogeys at the 17th and 18th pegged him back.

David Toms, who has won the tournament twice, was on seven under through 14 holes and Phil Mickelson, playing his first tournament since his wife was diagnosed with cancer, is on four under on the 15th hole when play was suspended.

Mickelson was two under for the round following birdies at the 4th, 8th and 9th.

The projected cut was even par and the weather delay meant John Daly, who is level at the halfway stage, faced a long wait to see if he would be playing this weekend.

Daly carded a 68 but his survival could have been sealed had he not double-bogeyed his last hole, the par-four 9th.

This is his first US PGA Tour event since the end of his six-month suspension.

Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington has three holes to try and make the cut after a part-finished round which included a double bogey, two bogeys and four birdies.

The Dubliner, who is on two over, missed his fourth cut of the year on US soil at last week's Memorial.

World number four Sergio Garcia was another player facing an early exit ahead of next week's US Open after the Spaniard posted a 73 to fall to three over.
