Montgomerie is keen to see golf in the Olympic Games
A decision will be revealed later this year over whether golf will be included at the 2016 Olympics.
Europe's 2010 Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie and ex-women's number one Annika Sorenstam helped present a bid to the International Olympic Committee.
"The IOC board will pick two sports to recommend in August," Peter Dawson, head of Open organisers the Royal and Ancient told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"Then in October the full membership will vote on the possible inclusion."
He added: "The great key points about the bid this time is that we were speaking as one voice.
"The top men and women in the sport have backed the bid and we told the IOC that the best names would be available for the 2016 Games.
"We also told the IOC that golf's calendar would be adjusted so that other tournaments would not clash with the Olympics."
Montgomerie was among 18 players who sent letters of support to IOC members in April.
Golf, last an Olympic sport in St Louis in 1904, is one of seven sports being considered for inclusion for 2016.
The others are baseball, karate, roller sports, rugby sevens, softball and squash.
Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington told the BBC's Inside Sport programme he would love to compete in the Olympics.
"I would love to see golf in the Olympics, I'd love to be an Olympian but I feel golfers would be the pariahs of the Olympics - we're not exactly considered athletes and we play a very lucrative sport," he said.
As well as the letters, the 18 players also included a 32-page dossier on why golf should be included in the Games, containing information on how many people play the sport around the world.
Jack Nicklaus and Sorenstam, global ambassadors for the campaign, have sent the same documents to IOC representatives from 75 other countries.
