Ballesteros has had four operations since October |
Golf legend Seve Ballesteros has made his first public appearance after a number of operations and chemotherapy to remove a cancerous brain tumour. Currently undergoing a fourth round of chemotherapy, the 52-year-old Spaniard attended Sunday's Spanish league match between Racing Santander and Almeria. Five-time major winner Ballesteros was given a standing ovation at the El Sardinero stadium. He has had four operations since the tumour was diagnosed last October. Dressed in jeans and a dark blazer, Ballesteros, who lives close to Santander, waved to fans and smiled. | 606: DEBATE |
The Spaniard was admitted to hospital in early October after fainting at Madrid Airport, and subsequently underwent a six-and-a-half hour procedure on 24 October to remove the tumour. Ballesteros is widely recognized as having transformed European golf, having won the Open three times, the Masters twice, and recorded 50 career victories on the European Tour. He retired from competitive playing in 2007 because of back trouble and since then has mainly concentrated on designing courses.
